The Super Mario Bros. franchise has always been known for innovation, and the NES era is where it all began. After the massive success of Super Mario Bros. and The Lost Levels (Japan's SMB2), Nintendo decided to bring something different to Western audiences. Rather than release a brutally difficult sequel, they reworked a Japanese title called Doki Doki Panic into what would become Super Mario Bros. 2. The result was a game unlike any other in the series, and one that still holds a special place in gaming history.
Released in 1988 in North American and 1989 in Europe, Super Mario Bros. 2 introduced mechanics never seen before in a Mario title. Instead of jumping on enemies to defeat them, players could pluck vegetables, pick up objects and even ride enemies around the screen. It also introduced multiple playable characters - Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach - each with their own unique abilities. The game's visual style and enemies, such as Shy Guys and Birdo, were so iconic that they became permanent fixtures in the Mario universe despite the game's unusual origins.
InvictusBM LP #010
After I could only muster up a Let's Fail video for the original Super Mario Bros., with SMB2 my 2D Mario series of 2025/26 began! This is definitely the shortest one of the bunch, and also the one I'm the worst at, so fails are guaranteed. :D This project right here is also the origin of the BOMBZ! This LP lasted for 5 episodes.
